Secondary Community of Practice (1)

To create opportunities for the sharing of emerging innovative practice between secondary schools in order to support, challenge and provoke ongoing transformation across the secondary education sector in Greater Christchurch. A scoping meeting was held at Breens Intermediate on 23 November 2015 with the following schools present (Cashmere, Linwood, Hornby, Kaiapoi, Villa Maria, Shirley Boys, Avonside, Hillmorton, St Thomas’s, Kingsley, Rolleston, Avonside Girls as well as MOE staff and Grow Waitaha facilitators).

Each school listed:
1. the expertise they feel able to share and
2. the topics that they would like to learn about from others

Principals, senior and middle leaders from a range of secondary schools across Greater Christchurch (perhaps 2–4 from each school). A community of practice involves ongoing participation and interaction by a core group rather than occasional attendance of some events by different people.

Each hui will have a number of schools share examples of their developments around agreed topics followed by interaction and discussion to build ideas and next steps. Each subsequent session builds on this learning.

The following topics of interest were selected from those negotiated at November meeting;
— Master planning for linking pedagogy and flexible learning spaces
— Student agency, self-management and vision for learning
— Flexible timetabling and management systems
— Collaborative teaching and teacher development

Further topics for hui later in 2016 (Authentic curriculum, emerging opportunities for Year 7 and 8’s, transitions between primary, intermediate and secondary schools, community connections)

The Secondary community of practice will initially be implemented as a series of hui over four afternoons in Terms 1 and 2, 2016. Participants will commit to attend each of these four hui which will be held at various secondary schools.
